Got paint plans? 5 paint tips you need to know before you get started

Colour has a big impact on your mood, and your interior. A relaxing bedroom, an inspiring home office, an inviting guest room: paint helps you create the right atmosphere in any space. But you can do even more with your paintbrush. You can change the perceived size and shape of a room, or make your furniture and decoration stand out. Eager to get started? Here are 5 tips for a successful outcome.

1. Think about the effect you want to achieve

It's almost magic: you can change the perceived size and shape of your living spaces by choosing the right paint colour. If you want to optically enlarge your living room, for instance, be sure to take light reflections into account, and use light colours. Painting the ceiling in a light colour will make the room feel higher. Conversely, to make a room feel longer, it's better to choose a dark ceiling. And if you have a large room that you want to make cosier, paint the far wall in a darker colour.

2. Set the right mood in the room

Cosy or professional? Relaxing or invigorating? Make sure the colours of your walls create the right atmosphere in your interior. From timeless neutrals to terracotta earth tones, you'll find a colour for every mood in the Flamant Paint palette. The first step? Create a limited colour palette, taking into account the existing elements in your space: from furniture to floors and doors. Apply the 60-30-10 rule throughout your home.

  • 60% primary colour: this is the colour of your walls and floors
  • 30% secondary colour: similar to the primary colour, but slightly different, e.g. an accent wall
  • 10% accent colour: used in decoration items, cushions and plaids to personalise your interior

3. Follow the light

So you've got your mind set on a colour and now you want to get started right away. That's understandable, but it's best not to rush things. At Flamant, you can easily order a handy colour chart with all 128 shades in our colour palette. And we also have convenient A5 colour samples and small test jars for every colour. This allows you to study your favourite shade at different times of the day and on the different walls of your room. After all, colours can look very different on walls flooded with natural light and on poorly lit walls. That's the only way you'll get a good sense of the final result in the entire space.

4. Make a sustainable choice

It's true: quality paint costs a bit more. But this extra expense pays itself back in satisfaction and time saved. Cheaper paint often contains more chalk particles, making it more prone to streaking. You'll also need more coats to get full coverage, and you won't get any long-term protection against scratches and stains. Flamant and Tollens work with the best pigments for natural and long-lasting results. And thanks to its revolutionary Air Care® technology, Flamant Paint is an air-purifying wall paint that removes harmful molecules from the air.

5. Choose the right finish

Your bathroom and your living room require different types of paint. Always choose the right type of paint for the room at hand. Use a matt paint for interior walls, a satin finish for washable walls, and a hard-wearing lacquer paint for (kitchen) furniture. At Flamant Paint you'll find it all: from primer and wall paint to interior and exterior paint.
