Inside look: villa apartment in Herent

Until recently, this newly built apartment between Leuven and Brussels was just empty white space. "But to me it was a beautiful white canvas, and that's every interior designer's dream," laughs interior architect Kathleen. The result is an inviting home with a mix of warm wood types, natural materials and modern details.

A first impression that sticks

One of the spaces that usually doesn't get a lot of love is the entrance hall. And yet, this is where you set the tone for the rest of your interior. "It's the first thing people see when they come in, so you want to make the most of it," Kathleen explains. "A slim console table is a great personal touch right from the get-go. Artful vases, a handy tray for your keys or the mail, and a lovely home fragrance: that's all you need for an instant welcome-home feeling."

Natural chic

A newly built apartment that feels cold and sterile? Just add Flamant. "We decided to go with an accent wall in every space, from the entrance hall and the living room all the way to the bedroom. The warm powder shades from our finely curated Flamant Paint palette contrast wonderfully with the white walls. In the bright living room, we went for a warm atmosphere with dark woods, rattan accents and soft textures in the carpet, the window decoration and the sofa. The combination of the modern, sleek environment and the natural materials and colours really gives a contemporary interpretation to cosiness." The interior design team then went in search of special pieces that would add even more character to the living room. "The XL oil painting is the focal point of this space, highlighted by the matching statement pendant lamp."

A retro touch with a modern twist

Rounded shapes like the curved backrests of the chairs, the round dining table and the organic pendant lamp break up the clean lines of the modern apartment. "Then again, the rectangular picture frames and the angular shape of the sideboard create the perfect shape repetition in this corner. That tension between hard lines and soft curves makes your interior so much more interesting," Kathleen explains. "And with the dark wood, the marble table top and the seventies lamp we added a playful retro vibe."

Smart decoration

A bedroom should ooze tranquillity. So no cluttered open shelves here, but an XL wardrobe along the entire length of the room. "This gives you plenty of storage space, while all the attention goes to your bed. We matched the decorative cushions, plaid and headboard to the weathered chest of drawers in recycled wood with original zinc handles for a harmonious feel."
